Extreme weather can cause damage to your roof. While it’s best to leave repair jobs to experts, you can still do some minor repairs before they arrive to ensure your home’s safety and comfort.
We recommend keeping repair tools handy just in case you encounter roofing issues. Here are items to include in your roofing first aid kit.

Invest in a high-quality tarp and a roll of heavy plastic for temporary repairs. For more permanent repairs, keep a roll of synthetic roof underlayment. It’s also a good idea to have a bundle of roof shingles. Make sure to keep them in a cool, dry place, and check them from time to time. Improper storage can cause the shingles to stick together and become useless.
Keep a vinyl-based roof sealer as well as roof repair caulk and caulking gun. Include roofing nails and a bundle of lath for nailing the underlayment or plastic so it doesn’t get blown off. Also, make sure you have the necessary tools for minor repairs, such as a good hammer, a box of cutter for the underlayment and a ladder to climb up onto the roof.
Repairs You Can Do & Safety Precautions
For a small leak, tape a piece of string near the hole, and attach it to a bucket. The string will direct the water to the bucket so the leak doesn’t spread around and cause more damage. Repeat the procedure for other small leaks. Water can damage electronics so cover them to prevent electrocution and fires. Place furniture away from the leak. Keep the area dry to prevent injuries and accidents.
Until your contractor arrives, keep the damaged area of the roof covered. This ensures rainwater doesn’t get into your home. Ask for assistance from your family or neighbors when climbing up a ladder. You can apply a premade stick patch or rubber peel to any leaks on the ceiling. It would temporarily stop the leak from spreading.
