Exterior Painting: Factors to Consider

Exterior painting is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to make your home look new and beautiful. That being said, it will still cost you a fair amount of money. So, to make sure you won’t have to repaint only after a few months or a couple of years, siding professionals suggest taking these factors into account.

Temperature

Outdoor temperatures can either make new paint cure well or do the exact opposite. However, no two types of paint are alike; some cure better in colder weather and some don’t. Whatever type of paint you’re using, though, it’s generally a good idea to paint when it’s 40 to 45 degrees out and not lower. The temperature should also stay that way for at least four hours. Paint should be allowed to dry for at least four to six hours. A deeper shade might mean two coats, and that will entail a longer drying time.

Lab Testing

While it’s easy to get lost in all the types of paint you’ll find at your local hardware store, only get the paint that’s been lab-tested for the type of surface you’ll be painting. This will help you determine how durable the paint is, how many coats you’ll be needing and what you can expect with drying times and temperature requirements. You can talk to a painting about this.

Condition of the Surface to Be Painted

The condition of the surface you’ll be painting will also determine the amount of time the project will take and the gallons of paint you’ll be using. Dirt, chalk, and mildew can take a while to address, but you have to carefully remove them to ensure your paint adheres properly and looks more or less the way you envisioned it to look. You are likely to need some caulking and priming as well. If the surface is really bad, such as if there are rotted boards, you’ll have to do some replacing. Consider that when determining the time you’ll need to finish the project, as well.
