We Renewed This 1930s Roof with GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles

For today’s Project Spotlight, we’re taking a look at a residential roof replacement our team completed here in Gainesville, GA on a home that was built nearly 100 years ago—sometime in the 1930s! While the replacement was far from routine, with a few additional steps required, our team expertly navigated these challenges to provide this homeowner with a roof that will last. Let’s get started.
Background & Client: A Classic Home in Gainesville
Our client for this project was a homeowner right here in Gainesville. This homeowner hadn’t previously worked with our team, but he was referred to Skyline Contracting by a past client of ours who spoke highly of their roofing experience with our team.
The home we would be working on is made of brick and dates back to the 1930s, with a roof design that featured a few unique features, including a curved section over the enclosed porch near the entrance of the home.
Before: Improper Installation and Leaks
This roof had a few problems that our team needed to solve, some due to the older construction and others not. One of the biggest issues was that leaks had formed due to the improper installation of the current roof only 10 years prior. This was an unfortunate situation that should have been avoided, so our team was very motivated to do right by these homeowners and ensure their new roof would last as long as possible.
In addition, the current roof’s decking seemed original to the home, and the way it was installed was unfortunately not up to the standards that the manufacturer—GAF—required for their warranty. This means our team would need to fully remove and replace the decking with brand-new products to ensure the roof would be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty
After: A New and Renewed Roof
Our team discussed the project with our client, and they agreed to move forward with the full roof replacement, including the decking. Our team set about completing the tear off of the roof, then installing all new decking up to modern standards and the standards set by GAF for their warranty.
We also installed new ridge vents, flashing around the brick chimney, ice and water shield at all transition areas, and a drip edge on rakes and eaves. With these layers of the roof in place, we finally installed the Timberline HDZ shingles to complete the look.
