We were called in as the general contractor of choice to build a covered outdoor patio at El Tepache Mexican Grill in Gainesville, GA.

Background & Client: El Tepache Mexican Grill
For this project, we worked with a local restaurant here in Gainesville: El Tepache Mexican Grill. Named for a traditional Mexican beverage, El Tepache serves a variety of delicious Mexican staples along with several variations of their signature tepache drink.
In starting this project, the folks at El Tepache were seeking a general contractor in Gainesville, GA who could construct a fully covered patio in front of the restaurant to provide comfortable outdoor seating for their guests. They needed a contractor with a wide range of skills, including roofing expertise to provide a functional and aesthetic cover for the structure.
Skyline Contracting was already familiar with El Tepache, having completed a handful of residential projects for the owner as well as other projects for the restaurant space. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that we’re regular customers, too! Once they decided they needed this patio, we were the go-to team for the job.
Planning a Full Covered Patio in Limited Space
The El Tepache team wanted a full, covered patio constructed in front of the restaurant to provide space for outdoor seating. The spot they had plotted out for the project was the parking spaces located directly in front of the restaurant. There was limited space available here, as the restaurant is located in a strip mall with other neighboring businesses. However, it was an area generally clear of obstructions that they felt would serve them well.
Our team’s goal during this project was to build a patio that would fit within these space constraints while also aligning well with the surrounding curbs to provide a more seamless experience.
Getting to Work
Before starting work, our team pulled the needed permits from the city. As this was a commercial space, we needed to submit plans through the city and get the parking area zoned accordingly. This took some time but was ultimately no issue.
In planning this outdoor space, we determined that a metal frame would provide durability and a space that would last, as opposed to wood that may otherwise rot with time. We could then install Trex composite decking to provide a more natural feel while also adding further durability.
Our team also had to solve the challenge of aligning the patio with the curbing. The curb at this location was rather high, and we wanted to ensure a seamless transition from the sidewalk to the outdoor space so customers wouldn’t feel as though they were sitting in a parking lot. We planned carefully to align the patio space well.
A Sturdy and Beautiful Outdoor Space
The end result of this project was an outdoor space that will serve El Tepache well for years to come. We built an aluminum-framed patio with Trex decking, then covered the entire structure with standing seam metal roofing.
We also ensured the space would be fully functional for their needs. That included adding power and water, shades for warmer and sunnier days, and lighting for nightly diners. The end result was a sturdy and highly versatile space for their restaurant.
