What Does It Take to Replace a Roof 100 Feet Off the Ground?
(Spoiler: Confidence, Craftsmanship, and a Whole Lot of Safety Gear.)
What’s the Challenge With Steep Roof Replacements?
Steep roof replacement contractors must use advanced safety systems and detailed project planning to manage high slopes and tricky angles. At Skyline Contracting, our roofing contractors recently completed one of our most daring projects yet: a 100-foot-high steep roof replacement on a landmark home overlooking Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA. Complete with a chimney restoration and full shingle system installation. Here’s how we made it happen.
Our Team of Roofing Contractors Tackled a Steep Roof Replacement for This Stunning Lake Lanier House
Nestled atop a steep hillside with commanding views of Lake Lanier in Gainesville, this home is a true landmark. And with more than 100 feet of height from the peak of this roof to the cul-de-sac below, it took all of our skill and safety protocols as steep roof replacement contractors to complete the project.
Our Project Spotlights blog series focuses on notable, unique, or impressive roofing projects we tackle here at Skyline Contracting—and this lake house roof replacement was a no-brainer to do a feature on! Let’s take a look at how we took on this challenge and delivered incredible results.
Client Background: A Longtime Connection
Although this was the first time our client officially worked with our team, the connection runs deep. This client was referred to us after we completed roofs on both of his adjacent neighbors’ homes. What’s more, he’s known Paul Rogers, one of our project managers, since childhood, as Paul graduated from high school with his daughter.
“We’ve known Paul since high school—this project felt more like helping a neighbor than hiring a contractor.”
– Homeowner, Lake Lanier
That kind of hometown connection, as local Gainesville roofers made this project feel more like helping out a friend than just another job site.
The Project: Steep Roof Replacement and Chimney Restoration
This project was one part restoration, one part roof replacement.
Our first step was to remove the old, leak-prone natural stone from the chimney and install a sleek synthetic stone system that would give a much more watertight seal due to the flat back of the material.
Following the stonework, our roofing contractors tackled a complete roof replacement, braving the steep roof to install GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Weathered Wood, along with matching GAF underlayment, ridge caps, boots, and accessories to ensure a uniform, durable finish.
Rain, Heights, and Ridgelines: This Project Had It All
This wasn’t a job for the faint of heart—or for those afraid of heights. The roof itself features steep 12/12 slopes, complex angles, and high ridgelines that require full safety harnesses. The chimney, meanwhile, rises 10 feet from the roofline, requiring scaffolding to be installed on the very steep and high roof to work on top of it.
Another challenge the Skyline Contracting team overcame during this chimney repair and roof replacement was the weather. We faced surprise rainfall after removing the stone from the original chimney. This meant our team had to work quickly to install flashing around the exposed chimney and ensure there was no leaking.
The Results: A Stunning Roof Replacement
Project Manager Paul Rogers and Brian Meggs led this project, organizing the team to ensure all of the logistical pieces were accounted for. Our crew, meanwhile, braved the dizzying heights and kept an eye on each other to ensure safety protocols were observed at all times.
The majority of this project was funded through insurance, which allowed our client to focus on getting the highest-quality materials for his home. The result? A gorgeous new roof and restored chimney, giving this home a new profile and curb appeal that can be seen right from Thompson Bridge, leading over Lake Lanier.
Our client was impressed by our speed and efficiency while working on this complex roof, and we’re proud of our team for the breathtaking results they produced!
