How Ignoring a Roof Leak Repair will Cost You

The Cost to Repair a Roof Leak Will Only Go Up Over Time

Most homeowners know that a leak is a severe roofing issue that should be addressed promptly. However, the cost to repair a roof leak may be significant, leaving homeowners wondering if it might be worth it to delay that roof repair after all. We’re here to tell you ignoring a roof leak will cost you more in the long run!

At Skyline Contracting, we’ve often been called in for repairs on neglected roofs. It’s always hard to break it to the homeowners that the cost to repair their roof would have been much lower if they’d only acted sooner. Here’s why you should always take action to repair a roof leak as soon as you notice it.

Roof Leaks Are Bad News for More Than Your Roof

Roof leaks don’t happen overnight. Typically, they’re a result of damage that occurred much earlier—typically months or even years. It’s important to have a regular roof inspection to catch potential damage early. But in all the time it takes for you to notice a roof leak, different portions of your home are being damaged by water entering through your roof.

This can include damage to the underlying structure of your roof; damage to paint or warping on interior walls; mold and mildew accumulating in your attic; and damage to flooring or your ceiling.

Immediate Attention Could Mean Minor Repairs

There is good news, however: the sooner you act, the more likely it is that your roof leak can be resolved with minor repairs. While a roof leak is a serious problem that requires a skilled roofer to resolve effectively, the bottom line is it can be fixed.

When identified and fixed quickly, the damage to portions of your home besides your roof should be minimal. You may need repairs to drywall or repainting in a room of your home, but this is still much better than it could have been.

Interior Damage Is Costly

On the other hand, if you put off a roof leak repair, the cost will only increase. This includes the cost to repair your roof—which may even need to be replaced if the leak is bad enough and underlying structure is compromised—as well as the cost to repair damage to your home.

Roof leaks can cause wood beams to rot, it can damage your flooring, it can ruin furniture, and in extreme cases it could even cause parts of your ceiling to collapse. This is an extreme example—but it all becomes more possible the longer you wait to schedule a repair. What’s more, if your insurance provider determines damage arose due to negligence on your part, they likely won’t cover the repairs.

Prevent Leaks Before They Happen

All that said, the best way to minimize damage to your home due to roof leaks is to prevent them from happening altogether. Even a leak you notice early on likely took months to become obvious. However, if a roofer had closely inspected your home, chances are they would have identified damage that created an opportunity for water to penetrate the surface of your roof.

To prevent leaks from happening and avoid the cost of a roof leak repair, the best strategy is to schedule regular roof inspections—we typically recommend once per year. If your home is hit by a major storm, an additional inspection will be warranted to ensure your roof is still in good condition.
