Our Complete Breakdown on Landmark, the Flagship Shingle from CertainTeed

At Skyline Contracting, we feel that educating customers on their roof replacement options is an important part of our job. Rather than pushing specific products, we like to ensure homeowners are able to make informed decisions for their homes, getting the look they want and the protection they need for their roof. That said, there are certain lines of products our customers frequently wind up choosing—and the Landmark shingle from CertainTeed is one of the most popular.

CertainTeed Landmark is a line of several architectural shingle products, each available in a wide range of styles and featuring subtle differences compared to one another. We often have homeowners come to us asking to install CertainTeed Landmark, but with several specific products available within that line, it’s important for customers to know more about the exact product they’re getting.

So to help homeowners choose the right shingle for their needs, we’re providing a full guide to the entire CertainTeed Landmark product line.

What Is the CertainTeed Landmark Shingle?

Landmark is a line of architectural shingles designed by CertainTeed to be their flagship shingle product. As architectural shingles, the basic composition of these shingles includes a fiberglass base with a durable coating of asphalt and mineral granules. While each individual product differs in its characteristics, there are certain aspects that are shared across all or most of these shingles. Some of these features are proprietary technologies designed by CertainTeed to create the best possible product for use across the US. • Multi-layer design featuring a fiberglass base

  • StreakFighter® algae protection
  • NailTrak® design for easier installation

While CertainTeed does offer a product that is simply called “CertainTeed Landmark,” as a whole this product line includes as many as eight varieties in total—depending on how you count. Each features its own subtle differences and characteristics. Not all are available in every area, however, so it’s important to discuss with your roofer the products that may be installed on your roof. You can review our region’s brochure at this link.

Here’s a full breakdown of all CertainTeed Landmark shingle offerings.

1. CertainTeed Landmark

The essential Landmark shingle, the base variety of this product is one of the most popular CertainTeed shingles. As an architectural shingle it features the typical dual-layer design of fiberglass and a protective exterior layer. These shingles stand up well against many types of damage, including superior fire resistance, algae resistance, and wind resistance.

2. Landmark PRO

The next step up from the basic Landmark variety, Landmark PRO is designed for even better performance. In particular, these shingles provide further impact resistance, making them an improved option for areas where hail damage is a common factor.

3. Landmark Premium

CertainTeed Landmark Premium is the ultimate high-performance architectural shingle, with superior protection against damage of all types, excellent warranty protection, and a wide range of available styles. These shingles are designed to withstand winds of up to 110 mph and can be warrantied up to 130 mph with the installation of a full CertainTeed roofing system. They also protect against wind-driven rain thanks to their heavier and sturdier design.
All in all, these shingles provide excellent protection against all elements and should be a consideration for homeowners looking to ensure their home will weather any storm.

4. Landmark TL

The TL variety, or triple laminate, is a shingle designed to provide superior style and performance. Landmark TL shingles are designed to emulate the appearance of wood shake, creating an attractive option for many homeowners. However, the triple-layer design is more than just aesthetic, as the resulting weight of the shingle enables it to stand up very well against storm damage and wind.

For homeowners interested in the aesthetic of wood shake roofing but without the risks, Landmark TL can be an interesting option. Availability may be limited in the Southeast region, however, as these shingles are more commonly sold in areas where wood shake roofing has been more prominent.

5. Landmark Solaris

Durability and appearance aren’t the only role that a shingle may play for your home. The CertainTeed Landmark Solaris shingle is designed to also add another benefit: energy efficiency.

Solaris shingles are designed for warm climates, with cool roof technology intended to reflect sunlight away from the home and provide protection against heat during the summer. This has made this shingle particularly popular throughout the South.
In addition to its energy efficiency, the Solaris line of shingles also provides excellent performance, durability, and aesthetic qualities. What’s more, the cool roof properties can also be combined with other Landmark shingle lines, with Landmark PRO Solaris and Landmark TL Solaris both popular options for homeowners looking to get the most from their roofs.

6. Landmark ClimateFlex

Lastly, Landmark ClimateFlex is a high-performance shingle designed specifically to resist hail damage. As the most impact-resistant Landmark shingle, ClimateFlex features a Class 4 rating from UL, enabling it to withstand even significant hail impacts.

Landmark ClimateFlex is a more regionally restricted product, however. These shingles are more commonly available across the northern US and in Canada, and less frequently sold in the southern US. Ask your roofer about availability in your area; they may also provide recommendations for alternative high-impact shingles.

How Do I Choose the Right Shingle?

With so many options available, it can feel a bit overwhelming to identify the right product for your home. While we always recommend consulting with an expert before making a final decision, there are several factors you can consider to begin weighing your options ahead of time. • Price and Budget – Each shingle variety will carry a different cost, and depending on your budget you may be limited to a few types of shingles. Generally, the more premium shingle varieties will cost more, and homeowners will need to decide if the tradeoff in greater cost for greater protection against storms is worth it.
  • Regional Needs – What kind of weather is your home typically most affected by? If you’ve had roofs frequently damaged by hail, an impact-resistant shingle will be a wise choice. If the hot Gainesville summers are a concern, the Solaris varieties can save money over time and keep your home more comfortable.
  • Personal Taste – Some homeowners prefer the traditional asphalt shingle look, while others will like the products that emulate wood shake roofing. In addition, each CertainTeed Landmark shingle is available in a wide array of colors—but if you have specific aesthetic preferences, that may help narrow down your options.

The good news: no matter what you choose, the entire Landmark shingle line from CertainTeed boasts superior quality, protection against the elements, and stylish designs. It’s hard to go wrong when choosing these shingles—but working with a trusted roofing professional can help you make a confident final decision.
